Darmasiswa
The Darmasiswa Program is a prestigious non-degree scholarship initiative offered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia. It invites young people from around the world to immerse themselves in the richness of Indonesian culture through formal study at select universities across the archipelago. Lasting for 10 to 12 months, the program provides a unique, structured opportunity to explore Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia), traditional arts, crafts, dance, music, culinary arts, and more, in an authentic, immersive environment.

The Darmasiswa Program is more than just a study opportunity it’s a cultural diplomacy effort that aims to build meaningful connections between Indonesia and other countries through shared cultural experiences. It encourages mutual respect, understanding, and appreciation between diverse cultures while spotlighting Indonesia’s incredible artistic and linguistic heritage. Participants often return home as cultural ambassadors, helping to promote Indonesian arts and language in their own countries.
Study Fields and Program Structure
Depending on the university selected, students can choose from a variety of study tracks that include:
Bahasa Indonesia: A full immersion into Indonesia’s national language, with structured lessons covering grammar, vocabulary, conversation, reading, and writing.
Traditional Dance and Music: Learn regional dances like Saman, Tari Piring, or Javanese court dances, and instruments such as gamelan or angklung under skilled practitioners.
Fine Arts and Crafts: Explore batik-making, sculpture, painting, wood carving, or textile arts deeply embedded in local traditions.
Culinary Arts: Discover the rich and diverse flavors of Indonesian cuisine, from rendang to nasi goreng, and learn cooking techniques in a hands-on environment.
Other Cultural Practices: Some institutions offer modern or contemporary art studies, traditional drama, puppetry (wayang), or even filmmaking and photography.
Each student is assigned to one of over 60 participating universities or cultural institutions across Indonesia ranging from Java and Bali to Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and other islands.
Eligibility and Who Can Apply
The program is open to foreign nationals aged between 18 and 32 years who have a sincere interest in learning about Indonesian language and culture. Applicants must have completed at least high school (or equivalent), demonstrate basic English or Bahasa Indonesia proficiency, and be in good health. A background in arts, humanities, or cultural studies is a plus, but not mandatory.

Application Requirements
Applicants must complete an online registration form and submit a set of documents that includes:
A curriculum vitae (following the official template)
Recent academic transcripts and certificates
A valid passport (with at least 18 months of validity)
A medical certificate confirming good health
A letter of recommendation from a teacher or professional
Proof of English language ability (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, or similar)
A 500-word personal essay explaining your interest in Indonesia and the program
A 2-minute motivational video where you introduce yourself and explain how you plan to use the experience to promote Indonesian culture
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview at the nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate in their home country.
Scholarship Benefits
The Darmasiswa scholarship covers:
Monthly living allowance to support daily expenses
One-time settlement allowance to assist with initial setup upon arrival
Book allowance to purchase learning materials
Health insurance through the host institution
Student visa sponsorship and official letters of support
Orientation program in Jakarta, which includes cultural briefings, excursions, and networking with fellow scholars
Please note: International travel to and from Indonesia is not covered by the program and must be arranged by the participant.
Program Timeline
Registration Period: Typically opens between February and April each year
Embassy Interviews: Conducted in April or May
Selection Announcement: Around June
Arrival and Orientation: Late August
Study Program Begins: Early September
Program Ends: June or August of the following year (depending on program length)
Participant Responsibilities
While the program offers an enriching and enjoyable experience, participants are expected to take their studies seriously and:
Attend all classes and cultural activities arranged by the university
Submit regular progress reports
Follow all immigration rules and university regulations
Represent their countries and the program with respect and integrity
